Christmas markets in Prague

Hello again,

Just a quick blog post this time on our recent weekend trip to Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. We wanted to go because we’d heard about the beautiful old town, and we were keen to get our European Christmas market fix for the year before coming back to Oz.

We flew out on the Friday night after work, getting to our accommodation around 11pm local time – still amazing to be able to do that. Our hostel was across the Vltava River at one end of the Charles Bridge – a tourist landmark. We went for a walk that night, beer in hand, to quickly explore the area. It was really cold (close to zero degrees)… and since we had forgotten to take the map we’d been given at the hostel (in our eagerness to grab the beers) our expedition was short lived. Still, we got to experience the Charles Bridge without the packs of people, which was cool (excuse the pun).

Saturday was really our only full day there so we did a walking tour and hit the markets later that evening. The walking tour was great – we were in a small group of four and we learnt all about the dark side of Prague’s history (or maybe all of the history is dark, we’re not sure). The old town is one of the prettiest we have seen – it escaped a lot of damage during WWII because it was conquered so easily by the Nazis following the Munich Agreement (or the Munich Betrayal, if you ask the Czechs). Because the weather was pretty lousy, the best time for photographs on this trip was at night. Here we were heading across the Charles Bridge toward the Christmas Market and into the old town.

The markets looked great – see below. We tried a type of cinnamon bread that seemed to be everywhere, and of course we had our fair share of mulled wine. Apart from the food and drink the shopping was pretty disappointing – but all in all still well worth the visit. Also… Eastern European prices were a pleasant surprise!

Now comes the main event – coming home to Australia! In one week we will be on a plane and wondering how to pass the next 24 hours… we can’t wait to see all the family and get some sunshine and beach! Til then…
